So you’re in Dubai — or maybe you’re planning to come — and you’re thinking, “Okay, I don’t want to deal with taxis all the time. I’ll just rent a car.”
Good call. Seriously, it’s one of the easiest and most flexible ways to move around here. But before you imagine yourself cruising past Burj Khalifa or taking a late-night drive down Sheikh Zayed Road, there’s one thing that can stop you faster than a red light — not having the right documents.

I’ve been in the car rental game here for years. And trust me, I’ve seen it all — people who bring every document under the sun… and some who think showing a selfie of themselves will work (it won’t). So let’s go through this step-by-step.

1. If You’re a UAE Resident — Here’s What You Need

If you live here, renting a car is super straightforward. Most companies, including us at Motorkart Rent a Car L.L.C, will ask for:

  • Emirates ID (front and back copy)
  • Valid UAE Driving License
  • Credit card (for security deposit — some accept debit, but credit is faster for refunds)

A lot of residents ask: “Can I rent a car without Emirates ID?”
The short answer — not usually. That’s your main proof you live here. Without it, most rental companies will treat you as a tourist, which means different rules and often higher deposits.

2. Can Tourists Rent a Car in the UAE?

Oh, absolutely. In fact, half our customers at Motorkart are tourists. Dubai is built for driving, and public transport, while good, doesn’t reach every cool spot you’ll want to see.

For tourists, you’ll usually need:

  • Passport copy
  • Visit Visa copy (or entry stamp in passport)
  • Home country driving license (valid in the UAE) OR an International Driving Permit if required

Here’s a quick story — we had a customer from Italy last year. He rented a convertible for a week, drove to Abu Dhabi for the F1 Grand Prix, then came back raving about how renting gave him the freedom to explore places no tour bus goes. That’s the big win with having your own car.

3. Do I Need an International License to Rent a Car in Dubai?

Not everyone does. If your home country license is from a country the UAE recognizes (like the US, UK, most of Europe, Australia, etc.), you can use that.
But if your license isn’t in English or Arabic, or your country’s not on the approved list — yeah, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Pro tip: Even if you don’t “need” an IDP, bringing one can help avoid confusion at smaller rental offices or during traffic checks.

4. Can Anyone Rent a Car in Dubai?

Not exactly. You need to:

  • Be of legal driving age here (more on that in a bit)
  • Have the right documents
  • Meet license validity rules

I once had a guy try to rent with a license that expired two years ago — he thought “since I can still drive back home” it was fine. It wasn’t. The system here will reject that instantly.

5. Can I Rent a Car with a New License in Dubai?

Yes, but here’s the catch — some companies won’t rent high-performance or luxury cars to new drivers (usually less than 6 months of license history).
We’re a bit more flexible at Motorkart, but we’ll still advise new drivers to start with something easier to handle, like an MG 3 or Nissan Sunny. Trust me — better than learning Dubai’s fast lane culture in a sports car.

6. How Old Do You Have to Be to Rent a Car in Dubai?

The legal driving age in the UAE is 18. But most rental companies — including us — require you to be 21 or older for standard cars, and 25+ for high-end sports cars or SUVs.
It’s not just a rule we made up — it’s partly about insurance coverage and partly about reducing risk.

Extra tips from my own experience

Check the car when you pick it up. Take photos of any scratches. Trust me, this saves arguments later.

  • Always carry your original documents. Copies sometimes work, but originals make things faster.
  • WhatsApp or call before you come. Saves you from wasted trips if something’s missing.
  • Ask about hidden fees. Some companies look cheap but will add random charges for mileage, cleaning, or delivery.

Quick Recap of the Main Documents You’ll Need

  • UAE Residents: Emirates ID + UAE Driving License + Credit Card
  • Tourists: Passport + Visit Visa + Home Country License or IDP
  • Security Deposit: Usually required, card refunds take 7–14 days
