Why I Am Writing This

Few months back, I met a tourist at Dubai Creek who was super frustrated. He had rented a car from a small shop near Deira thinking he got the cheapest deal. But when he returned the car, the final bill was almost double. Why? Hidden charges everywhere – insurance extra, late return fine, fuel charge, even salik charges he never knew about. He told me angrily, Vaishali, I wish I just WhatsApp you before booking. This is pure headache.”

That day I realized, so many people – tourists and even UAE residents – fall into the same trap when they go for a cheap deal.

That’s why I’m writing this guide. If you plan to rent a car in Dubai (whether it’s a Nissan Sunny for rental in Dubai a budget drive, or you’re going for a monthly car hire in Dubai), you need to know about all these hidden charges. Otherwise, the cheap deal becomes the most expensive mistake.

And honestly, if you are still confused, better just call or WhatsApp Vaishali (+971 56 347 6239) at Motorkart. She explains everything crystal clear before you rent. Or simply visit our office at Madina Mall – 2nd Floor, First Gulf Center, Office 8 – Muhaisnah 4 – Dubai.

Common Hidden Charges People Face

1. Salik (Toll) Charges
Dubai uses an electronic toll system called Salik. Every time you pass a gate, 4 AED is deducted. Many rental companies don’t explain this properly. Some even add their own “service fee” on top. I once heard a traveler in Bur Dubai say his 7-day rental had 200 AED extra salik because he drove daily from Deira to Marina.

👉 Tip: Always ask how salik is billed. With Motorkart, you pay only actual salik, no hidden fees.

2. Fuel Charges
Many companies give you a car with a full tank and expect the same return. If not, they charge crazy refuel rates. Petrol costs 30 AED, but they might charge 60 AED for the same. One of our corporate client in Business Bay told me he end up spending more on petrol penalties than the car rental itself.

👉 Tip: Always confirm the fuel policy before driving away.

3. Insurance Confusion
Most rental companies often say “insurance is included,” but they usually means only basic coverage. If an accident happens, you still pay a high deductible. Some agents will even push you to take “full insurance” at the last minute.

👉 Tip: At Motorkart, Vaishali explains all insurance types before booking – basic vs full – so you know exactly what’s covered.

4. Late Return Fee
Rent a car for 24 hours and return it even one hour late? Some companies charge a full extra day. I heard about a customer in Al Nahda who returned his car just 45 minutes late and still got billed for a whole day.

👉 Tip: Ask about the grace period. Motorkart gives you clear timelines, no tricks.

5. Mileage Limit
Cheap rentals often come with a low mileage cap – like 200 km per day. Extra kilometers cost 1–3 AED each. A simple Dubai-to-Abu Dhabi round trip can easily cross the limit.

👉 Tip: Always check if your deal is unlimited km or limited.

6. Security Deposit
Most companies block 1000–3000 AED on your card as security. The headache is refund delays – sometimes 15–30 days, sometimes more.

👉 Tip: Motorkart is transparent – you know the exact refund timeline upfront.

7. Airport Pick-Up / Drop Fees
If you pick your rental directly from Dubai Airport, many companies silently add 50–150 AED as a “service fee.” They don’t mention this at booking time.

👉 Tip: Always ask clearly about airport pickup charges.

8. Damage & Cleaning Fees
Some renters get billed for tiny scratches or even sand inside the car. A UK tourist told me he got hit with a 400 AED “cleaning fee” after a beach trip.

👉 Tip: Always take a video and photos of the car at pickup.

How to Avoid Hidden Charges

✅ Always ask everything in writing before booking.
✅ Take photos/videos of the car during pickup and drop.
✅ Clarify insurance, salik, mileage, and fuel policy.
✅ Choose a company that explains costs upfront – like Motorkart.

Because when you rent a car, you want freedom, not financial shock.
